Our Top 5 Family-Friendly Safari Lodges (Greater Kruger)

We get asked one question more than any other: “Which lodge should we take the kids to?” After staying at dozens of lodges across Kruger and Greater Kruger, as safari planners and as parents, these are the five we recommend to families again and again. Each one earns its place for a different reason, because the best family lodge depends entirely on your kids’ ages, your budget and how you like to travel.

RockFig Safari Lodge: best value five-star (Timbavati)

Best for: families of four who want true five-star luxury and their own vehicle, without paying private-vehicle prices.

RockFig’s four-guest vehicle cap means a family of four effectively gets a private game drive vehicle as standard, something you simply don’t find elsewhere at this price. The rebuilt lodge is beautiful: brand-new, spacious suites, each with a heated plunge pool you can use year-round, and the lodge is fenced, which makes life with young kids far easier. Children of any age are welcome on drives, including babies.

The trade-off: there’s no kids’ club, babysitting or structured children’s activities, so it suits families whose kids are happy on drives and self-sufficient between them.

Chitwa Chitwa: the luxury pick (Sabi Sands)

Best for: families with the budget to do it properly. This is the one.

Chitwa Chitwa is where we send families when the budget allows, and nobody has ever come back disappointed. The two-bedroom family suites are extraordinary, there are proper kids’ activities, and you can add a private vehicle and even a private chef. The private plunge pools have a spectacular view over the waterhole, and meals can be taken in your suite, meaning with young kids you never have to leave your room, which is a bigger luxury than it sounds.

Kids need to be 6+ for shared game drives (younger children can go out on a private vehicle), and keep an eye on their family specials: free-night deals for kids can take a serious chunk off the total.

Kambaku Safari Lodge: best value overall (Timbavati)

Best for: families who want the full safari experience at the friendliest price on this list.

Kambaku proves you don’t need a five-star price tag for a brilliant family safari. It’s four-star comfort at a fantastic price, with a proper kids’ club and structured activities, and children from 5 can join game drives (most lodges say 6+). The family room has a shared bathroom, but you can also book interleading rooms with separate bathrooms, the setup we’d recommend for families with older kids.

Simbavati River Lodge: best kids’ setup (Timbavati)

Best for: families whose kids need proper entertainment between drives.

Simbavati has one of the best children’s setups we’ve seen anywhere in Greater Kruger: structured kids’ activities plus a dedicated kids’ club room. If your children are at the age where downtime needs filling, this is the lodge that fills it best. The family rooms are comfortable, though not as spacious as some others on this list, and have a shared bathroom.

Fitzpatrick’s at Jock: best for exclusive use (Kruger National Park)

Best for: multi-generational groups and families who want a whole lodge to themselves.

Recently renovated Fitzpatrick’s at Jock is a different proposition: you book the entire lodge, so it’s your private villa in the middle of Kruger National Park. Total flexibility: meals when you want, drives when you want, no other guests. Kids’ activities are offered, though in our experience without the structured program of Kambaku, Simbavati or Chitwa Chitwa. Being inside Kruger itself is a bonus if you want to add a self-drive element to your trip.

So which one is right for your family?

Quick version: RockFig for five-star value and a private vehicle; Chitwa Chitwa if budget allows; Kambaku for the best price with a kids’ club; Simbavati for the best kids’ program; Fitzpatrick’s for exclusive use. But ages, bathroom setups, activities and specials all shift the answer. Our guide on how to choose a family safari lodge covers what to check, or just tell us about your family and we’ll shortlist for you. We’ve stayed at every lodge on this list.
