Four nights of private safari. Four nights of barefoot island luxury. One beautifully simple journey between them.
This eight-night South Africa safari and Mozambique beach holiday begins at O.R. Tambo International Airport, flies directly into the Timbavati, then continues from the lodge airstrip via Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and Vilanculos to &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge.
The clever part is the connection. On the right operating day, this is one of the rare African journeys where you can begin with a morning game drive and end the afternoon barefoot, cocktail in hand, on a secluded island beach.

Our honest view
We have stayed at RockFig ourselves, so that recommendation comes from first-hand experience. We have not yet stayed at Benguerra Island or travelled this exact combination, although it is a journey we are planning. Until we have done so, we will be clear about what comes from our experience, what comes from trusted suppliers and which details still need to be reconfirmed for 2027.
Why this South Africa and Mozambique combination works
Some safari-and-beach holidays lose a full day returning to a major hub. This one is designed around a regional connection instead.
Federal Airlines flies between O.R. Tambo and Rockfig Airstrip in the Timbavati. On the fifth day, the lodge flight continues to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, where an Airlink service connects to Vilanculos on selected operating days. A helicopter then covers the final stretch to Benguerra Island in approximately ten minutes.
“Game drive in the morning. Cocktail on a secluded island beach by afternoon.”That is the reason this route is so compelling.
The landscapes are completely different, but the style remains consistent: small-scale, personal and immersed in the surrounding wilderness.
Nights 1–4: RockFig Safari Lodge, Timbavati

RockFig sits in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the open Greater Kruger ecosystem. With only six suites and no more than 16 guests, it offers an unusually intimate safari experience.
We stayed at RockFig in 2026 and loved its combination of serious wildlife viewing, warm service and beautifully private suites. The lodge limits shared safari vehicles to four guests, giving everyone more space and making it easier to spend time at the sightings that matter.
- Only six suites, each with a private heated plunge pool
- A maximum of four guests per shared safari vehicle
- Morning and afternoon or evening game drives
- Guided bush walks when conditions allow
- Access to approximately 30,000 acres of unfenced wilderness adjoining Kruger National Park
- All meals, selected drinks and daily laundry included
- A boutique, individually tailored style of service

Day 5: From the Timbavati to Benguerra Island

After a final morning game drive, fly from Rockfig Airstrip to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. Federal Airlines will need your onward flight details so the lodge departure can be planned around the Vilanculos connection.
From KMIA, fly to Vilanculos International Airport. An &Beyond representative will meet you on arrival before a spectacular helicopter flight across the Bazaruto Archipelago to Benguerra Island.
Important: the latest published KMIA–Vilanculos schedule operates on selected days rather than daily. We will date-match the itinerary and reconfirm the flight schedule before booking.
Nights 5–8: &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge
Benguerra gives the trip a second wildlife chapter rather than simply adding a resort at the end. The lodge sits within the protected Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, with coral reefs, seagrass meadows, turtles, dolphins and the largest dugong population on Africa’s east coast.
Each Cabana or Casinha has a private deck and plunge pool, while the lodge pool, beach and dhow-inspired bar make it easy to shift into a completely different rhythm from safari.

Included island experiences
- Scheduled snorkelling trip
- Sea kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding
- Sunset dhow cruise
- Horseback riding, subject to the 85 kg weight restriction
- Castaway picnic
- Local village or island experience
Optional experiences
Guests who want to add more can consider scuba diving through the PADI centre, fishing, swimming with horses, an island expedition, spa treatments or a scenic helicopter flight. These experiences are subject to weather, availability and any applicable additional charge.

Why choose Mozambique for the beach stay?
Benguerra’s value becomes much clearer when the comparison is genuinely like for like. Mauritius or a larger Zanzibar resort can offer a lower room rate, but few alternatives combine this level of seclusion, inclusions and marine wildlife with such an efficient route from the Greater Kruger.
The four-night Benguerra portion is approximately US$5,440 / A$7,750 per person, including the provisional flight from KMIA to Vilanculos, four nights in a Cabana, park fees and return shared helicopter transfers.
| Beach option | Broad cost comparison | What changes after a Greater Kruger safari |
|---|---|---|
| Benguerra, Mozambique | Premium, but unusually inclusive | The strongest same-day fit, with a secluded island setting and a wide choice of included experiences |
| Mauritius | Usually less expensive, with more resort offers | Excellent choice and value, but normally requires returning to Johannesburg; many headline rates include fewer meals and activities |
| Zanzibar | Often less at a conventional five-star resort; private-island stays can cost as much or more | A natural partner for Tanzania or Kenya, but a less direct match for the Timbavati |
| Seychelles | Often similar or higher at an equivalent private-island level | Usually requires a Johannesburg connection and may add another island flight or boat transfer |
| Maldives | Often similar or higher once meal plans and resort transfers are added | Exceptional overwater-villa choice, but the greatest detour from Southern Africa for a four-night add-on |
For travellers whose priority is the lowest possible beach price, Mauritius or a larger Zanzibar resort may win. Benguerra’s advantage is the complete package: a protected, low-density island; marine wildlife; meaningful included experiences; and very little of the holiday lost in transit. It feels like a continuation of the safari rather than a separate holiday bolted onto it.
Your 9-day itinerary
Day 1: O.R. Tambo to the Timbavati
Check in at the Federal Airlines lounge at O.R. Tambo International Airport and fly directly to Rockfig Airstrip. Settle into your suite and, flight timing permitting, head out on your first afternoon game drive.
Days 2–4: Safari at RockFig
Settle into the rhythm of early morning wildlife activities, relaxed breakfasts, time around your private plunge pool and afternoon drives continuing into the evening. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino are all possible, but the real pleasure comes from following what the bush offers rather than racing through a checklist.
Day 5: Timbavati to Benguerra Island
Fly from Rockfig Airstrip to KMIA, connect to Vilanculos and take the short helicopter flight over the Bazaruto Archipelago to Benguerra Island.
Days 6–8: Benguerra Island
Choose between included island experiences and doing absolutely nothing. Snorkel, paddle, cruise by dhow, ride along the beach, disappear for a castaway picnic or simply enjoy your private pool and the warm Indian Ocean.
Day 9: Helicopter to Vilanculos
Return to Vilanculos International Airport by helicopter, where this itinerary ends. We can help arrange the best onward option for your international flights or wider African journey.

2027 indicative pricing
From approximately US$10,800 / A$15,350 per person twin share
Based on four nights at RockFig for the price of three, four nights in a Benguerra Cabana, the specified lodge inclusions and levies, both Federal Airlines sectors, a provisional US$300 allowance for Airlink and return shared helicopter transfers.
RockFig’s Stay 4, Pay 3 offer and the 2027 Airlink schedule and fare must be confirmed. If the promotion is unavailable, the fourth RockFig night would increase the working total to approximately US$12,150 / A$17,300pp. Every quote will be recalculated for the selected dates and current exchange rate.

Upgrade your safari: substitute Tanda Tula
RockFig is not a compromise; it is intentionally the smaller, more private-feeling base option. Tanda Tula is the upgrade for travellers wanting a more expansive camp experience, a strong sense of place and a little more theatre around the safari.
Stay four nights at Tanda Tula followed by four nights at Benguerra Island from approximately US$13,250 / A$18,850 per person twin share, using Tanda Tula’s confirmed 2027 Stay 4, Pay 3 offer on eligible dates.
This replaces RockFig rather than adding a second Timbavati lodge. If you want to add another safari stay, we would normally recommend choosing a contrasting region.
When to travel
January to March
Green season in the Timbavati is warm, lush and dramatic, with afternoon storms, migrant birds and young animals. Benguerra is hot and tropical, with weather and sea conditions varying from day to day. This is also one of the likely RockFig value periods.
May to September
The Timbavati is dry and cooler, with crisp mornings and increasingly concentrated wildlife. These months are excellent for safari but do not qualify for the stay-pay offers used in the advertised starting prices. June to September can also be a good period for whale sightings around the Bazaruto Archipelago, although sightings are never guaranteed.
November to mid-December
This is the second value window and a good opportunity to combine a safari stay-pay offer with Benguerra’s standard rate before festive peak pricing begins.
Practical details
Flight schedule
The latest published Airlink schedule operates KMIA to Vilanculos on selected days rather than daily. The 2027 schedule is not yet available, so dates must be matched to the operating day before confirmation.
Luggage
Guests should travel with soft-sided luggage. Federal Airlines’ standard allowance is 20 kg, and the Benguerra helicopter transfer requires a maximum of 20 kg per person including hand luggage. Hard suitcases are not accepted for the helicopter transfer.
Malaria and insurance
Both the Timbavati and Mozambique are malaria-risk areas. Travellers should obtain individual medical advice and comprehensive travel insurance appropriate to the itinerary, activities and light-aircraft connections.

Yes. One of the simplest luxury combinations is four nights in the Greater Kruger followed by four nights on Benguerra Island. This itinerary flies from O.R. Tambo to the Timbavati, connects through KMIA to Vilanculos and finishes with a short helicopter transfer to the island, without returning to Johannesburg between safari and beach.
Not on the latest published schedule. The route currently operates on selected days, and the 2027 timetable still needs to be released. We will build the dates around the operating schedule rather than add an unnecessary Johannesburg overnight.
Yes. Four nights gives you three full days at each destination and protects the trip from feeling rushed. It is also the pattern that makes the stay-pay offer especially valuable when available.
Yes. It is particularly well suited to a honeymoon because it combines active safari days with a slower, private island stay. Honeymoon benefits and stay-pay offers cannot always be combined, so we will compare the options for your chosen dates.
Yes. Tanda Tula is the premium safari option within the same eight-night structure: four nights at Tanda Tula followed by four nights at Benguerra. We would not normally combine RockFig and Tanda Tula because they are in the same safari area.
At Vilanculos International Airport after the return helicopter flight from Benguerra Island. This allows your onward journey to be tailored to your international flights or wider African itinerary.
