RockFig Safari Lodge Review (2026) — Timbavati, Greater Kruger

Cara at RockFig Safari Lodge

RockFig Safari Lodge is one of the newest luxury safari lodges in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, and after staying there for two nights in June 2026, we can confidently say it deserves a place on any shortlist for travellers seeking a high-end Greater Kruger safari. During our stay we saw all three big cats, including a rare white lion cub, one of only a handful known to exist in the wild.

RockFig sits in the heart of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve (one of our favourite reserves in Greater Kruger) and was completely rebuilt and reopened in early 2026 as a more upmarket offering that combines the original personal service and great game viewing with a real wow factor and true five-star modern luxury.

I have long wanted to stay at RockFig as I have had some amazing sightings on their property while staying at neighbouring lodges – including my very first leopard sighting back in 2012 (a leopard named Rockfig Jnr, RIP).

Needless to say, we were excited to put the new lodge through its paces. Two nights later, Van has declared it his new favourite. Read on to find out why.

RockFig Safari Lodge — Accommodation, Food & Service

The Rooms

RockFig has six rooms in total: four standard suites with waterhole views, and two family suites. All six have private plunge pools, and importantly, they are heated. This is a bigger deal than it sounds. At many lodges, private plunge pools look beautiful but aren’t especially appealing in winter, even when daytime temps are warm. At RockFig, you can actually use them year-round.

The family suites are basically the same as the standard suites, with the addition of a smaller second bedroom with twin beds, and a slightly larger deck with additional table and chairs.

There is still one shared bathroom, making it suitable only for families, not couples travelling together.

The rooms themselves are brand new, beautifully appointed and huge. They come equipped with virtually everything you would ever need – except for a full-length mirror (how is one to evaluate their safari style??).

Rooms 1-3 have excellent views of the waterhole, Room 4 has a partial view of the waterhole, and Rooms 5 and 6 (family suites) have a bush outlook.

The bathroom includes not one, not two, but THREE sinks, a HUGE shower room, an outdoor shower and a massive bath. The mini bar is well stocked with all the essentials and a great range of local snacks.

As you can see from the photos, the aesthetic is modern luxury and overall it gets 5/5 from us. Van went so far as to label it his favourite room so far, which is a very big call!

The Lodge & Service

RockFig is fenced, which means you won’t encounter elephants walking around the lodge, and you don’t need to be escorted to and from your room after dark. I personally love unfenced lodges, but fencing makes navigating the grounds at night easier and is genuinely better for families with young children. There’s still plenty of wildlife to be seen from the lodge and during our stay we spotted giraffe, hyenas, elephants and nyala from our suite and the dining area.

With only six rooms, the feel is genuinely intimate and personal. The staff know your name and there’s always someone when you need something, but not in the overly attentive, slightly awkward way that can sometimes happen at high-end lodges. There’s also a gym and spa on site, with treatment prices that are very reasonable for a lodge of this calibre. Highly recommended if you can squeeze one in. I did.

The Food

Drinks at RockFig Safari Lodge bush breakfast

Excellent. Fair warning: as with most lodges, you are bound to put on weight with constant meals. At RockFig this includes pre-drive drinks and snacks, breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner.

What sets RockFig apart is their bush breakfast, set up each morning on a dry river bed. The menu rotates, and it’s one of the best breakfasts I’ve personally had on safari. While it might not be the biggest in terms of selection, I loved the simplicity and most importantly, the taste.

I’m not always a fan of the bush breakfast as I often prefer to be at the lodge for flexibility (ie. you can have a quick breakfast or utilise wifi while eating), but it’s hard to complain too much given we managed a cheetah sighting on our way back from breakfast on one of the mornings!

Overall I think RockFig does an excellent job balancing their quantity and quality in terms of food. Their lunch is one course (not an unncessary 2 or 3 courses that other places offer), and their high tea is not over the top. You still end up eating WAY too much, but at least you may not be quite as uncomfortably full as some other lodges.

Another nice touch at RockFig is that they give you the option to either eat dinner at a communal table with all guests, or have a private table to yourselves. You can change this on each day according to how you feel (and how much you like your fellow guests).

All meals, drinks (excluding premium champagne), game drives and laundry are fully included in the rate.

Game Viewing at RockFig Safari Lodge

The Wildlife Sightings

RockFig is located in Western Timbavati, sharing traversing with lodges like Kambaku, Tanda Tula, Kings and Walkers. The overall traversing area exceeds 12,000 hectares, which is more than enough to ensure diversity of wildlife and scenery. This is one of our favourite game viewing areas in all of Greater Kruger, and one of the most productive for big cats.

At the moment, lions are really dominating parts of the Timbavati, which means your chances of seeing them are very high, but it can also mean leopards are a little harder to find than in somewhere like Sabi Sands (where the reverse is true). That said, we saw all three big cats (cheetah, leopard and lion) across our four drives. And while cheetah is still considered quite rare in this area, we have personally had good luck with them in Western Timbavati on multiple occasions.

This area is also famous for white lions, and at the time of our stay, we were lucky enough to see a white lion cub. With only a handful of white lions known to exist in the wild globally, this was a genuinely rare and special sighting.

Across our four game drives, we had:

  • 2 cheetah sightings
  • 1 leopard sighting
  • 2 lion sightings (including the white lion cub)
  • 1 rhino sighting
  • Elephant, giraffe, hyena, zebra, hippos and more

As always, sightings can never be guaranteed. But this is a very productive area and we always recommend staying for at least three nights — ideally four — to maximise your chances of Big 5 sightings and to allow time to enjoy the lodge between drives.

The Game Drive Experience

One of RockFig’s most genuinely unique features is their vehicle policy: they cap each vehicle at four guests (unless you’re travelling as a larger group). For a family or group of four, this means you effectively get a private vehicle as standard, without the premium that most other lodges charge. It’s a major advantage for families wanting flexibility, whether that means leaving a little later, spending longer at a sighting, or simply making the experience more manageable with younger children.

The downside though is that you don’t get as much opportunity to meet other people, and I can tell you that we have met some awesome people on our game drives, which make sundowner stops so much more fun!

One thing worth knowing: this area of Timbavati is busy, meaning sightings are shared across lodges and capped at two vehicles per sighting. On a productive day this can mean a short wait or a time limit at a sighting. It’s a minor trade-off for the quality and frequency of what you’ll see, but worth knowing if you’re a keen photographer or hoping to observe animal behaviour over a longer period.

Going on Safari with a Baby or Kids at RockFig

Rockfig Safari Lodge welcomes children of all ages, both at the lodge and out on drive. This is a differentiator from most other lodges, which typically only allow children over 6 to go out on drive (unless you pay for a private vehicle). This combined with the high likelihood of a private vehicle make it a great option if you want to take your kids out with you.

The lodge is fenced, the suites have private heated plunge pools, the family suites are spacious, and the game drive setup gives you more flexibility than you would find at many other luxury lodges.

The main thing to be aware of when travelling with kids is that RockFig does not currently offer a kids’ club, babysitting or dedicated children’s activities. That means it works best for families whose children are happy to join game drives and keep themselves entertained between game drives.

For parents wanting some downtime without children or particularly for kids between 4-10 years, who could benefit from activities, there may be better lodge options.

That’s why we do what we do (visit them all), as the “best” family safari lodge is not the same for every family. We can provide the best options according to the ages of your children, how well they will manage game drives, whether you want a private vehicle, how much downtime you need, and whether you want a kids’ club, babysitting or more child-focused activities.

Things to Consider before booking

  • The Timbavati is a busy reserve: sightings are capped at two vehicles per sighting and you may occasionally need to rotate out
  • Current high lion density in the area can make leopard sightings a little harder than usual (we still saw one)
  • No kids’ club, babysitting or dedicated children’s program
  • Families with younger children need to be comfortable taking them on game drives
  • Rooms 1–4 are missing a full-length mirror. We cannot stress how important this is for safari outfit evaluation. (Request formally lodged.)
  • No desk in the room, which may be an issue for anyone needing to use a laptop regularly

Who RockFig Safari Lodge is best suited to

RockFig Safar Lodge pool

Rockfig is a particularly strong option for groups or families of four and anyone who is looking for a polished but personal five-star safari experience in one of Timbavati’s most productive game viewing areas.

RockFig is priced around the low to mid 5-star level, which we believe is excellent value for the experience. We felt we had everything we needed from a luxury safari, without some of the more unncessary bells and whistles or over-attentive service that some of the lodges with a higher price point offer.

For families, the combination of two-bedroom family suites, heated plunge pools, a fenced lodge and a four-guest vehicle policy makes it especially appealing. Younger children and even babies are allowed on game drive, which is not always the case at other luxury lodges.

However, RockFig will not be the perfect fit for every safari. If you want a dedicated kids’ club, ultra-exclusive traversing (with longer predator sightings), or a safari focused on leopard or cheetah sightings, there may be other Greater Kruger lodges better suited to your trip.

This is why we always recommend choosing a safari lodge based on more than just photos, generic reviews or price. The right choice depends on your travel style, children’s ages, preferred wildlife, budget, season and logistics.

Not sure whether RockFig is the right lodge for your safari? We can help compare it with other Greater Kruger lodges we know first-hand, based on your budget, wildlife wishlist, preferred travel style and logistics.

So, should you stay at RockFig Safari Lodge?

Yes, if you’re looking for a luxury safari with beautiful rooms, excellent food, strong big cat viewing and the rare bonus of an almost-private vehicle experience. For families of four in particular, this is one of the best value propositions in Greater Kruger: a private vehicle effectively included in the rate is something you simply don’t find elsewhere. But even beyond that detail, RockFig delivers across every measure: the rooms are beautiful, the food is excellent, the service is warm and five-star, and the game viewing is as good as Timbavati gets.

We’d recommend a minimum of 3-4 nights to make the most of the area.

We’ll be back. We have to… it’s Van’s new favourite lodge.
